Virechana for Women's Health: Addressing Pitta-Related Issues

Virechana is a promising solution for many issues faced by women today. Regarding women's health, reproductive health is of primary priority; this comprises quality of ovum and healthy menstruation.
The quality of any chemical substance in the body is referred to as "pitta."

The quality of pitta in the body reflects all the hormones, organ stability and metabolism, blood components, and the makeup of all organs in the body. Specific to women, this is related to ovum quality, cycle, and ability to conceive.

Pitta Imbalances in Women - What Is It?

Based on the functions of pitta, it is of five types in the body. Namely:

  • Pitta responsible for digestion (Pachaka) - This means both the gross digestion in the stomach and intestine and the cellular digestion happening while absorbing the nutrients in the body.
  • Pitta responsible for metabolism (Ranjaka pitta) - Since the liver is the endocrine capital of the body, this pitta is depicted as responsible for liver and spleen. This on a deeper front, refers to the quality of all hormones including female hormones.
  • Pitta responsible for emotional health (Sadhaka pitta) - We can compare this with adrenaline and cortisol response and the biological clock within the body.
  • Pitta for vision (Alochaka pitta) - This refers to eye health.
  • Pitta for skin and blood health (Bhrajaka pitta) - This refers to skin health and the quality of pigments in the body.

These five types of pitta are involved in the proper menstruation and the ovarian cycle in women. Imbalance of pitta in women begins with something as simple as irritable bowel syndrome and digestive disturbances.

Outcome of Pitta Imbalance in Women

Over time, this proceeds with delay or reduced quantity of menstrual fluid or painful menstruation. Here are a few prominent pitta imbalances in women:

  • Thyroid imbalance - Thyroid is a key hormone that has a lot of influence on the women's reproductive system. Thyroid is also related with metabolism of the whole body and is interconnected with all the processes. Imbalance in thyroid can eventually lead to impairment in the reproductive system.
  • Painful menstruation - Dysmenorrhea is a sign of pitta imbalance in the ovarian unit. In this case, pitta also creates an imbalance in the normal vata movement.
  • Obesity  -  This is one menace, especially in women, that can cause so many troubles in their health. Pitta imbalance can lead to obesity in two ways - by disturbing fat metabolism and by inducing inflammation due to alteration of gut flora.
  • PCOS - Poly cystic ovarian syndrome, is a result of imbalance pitta in the ovaries. This can greatly affect the ovarian quality and the functioning of normal metabolism.

And the list can go on. Virechana is an Ayurvedic panchakarma procedure that can pull out the excessive toxins associated with pitta areas in the body. Let us check out what virechana is and its benefits.

Virechana and Everything About It

Virechana aims at cleansing the pitta. It aims to protect the important gut flora in the intestines. Disoriented gut flora is a main outcome of pitta imbalance, and this can pave the way for all other disorders.

Virechana is mainly a therapeutic purgation that removes all the chemical wastes within the body via stools.

Here is a short brief on the virechana procedure and how it works within the body.

  • Pre-virechana procedure - This involves a virechana diet. In this procedure, all the toxins in various corners of the body are accumulated and collected in the intestine. All the channels in the body are centrally connected in the intestine. This anatomical arrangement makes it possible for all the excessive toxins to collect at the central area for expulsion.
  • Prime virechana treatment - Ayurvedic medicated decoction is given and the urge to defecate is awaited. This power cleanses the ovarian channels of the accumulated chemical waste due to stress, junk food and other sources.
  • Post virechana treatment - This is very important. After the complete purgation. The intestine will be eager to accept anything with full force. This means if a healthy diet is given it will be  absorbed fully.

Hence, the diet after virechana and the lifestyle after virechana are very important for full benefits. Ideally, if the diet and lifestyle are in alignment with improving the reproductive system, it will be beneficial.

The choice of medicated herbs for virechana is also made specific to the individual and their body constitution.

Based on the intensity, virechana is of three types - mild, moderate and severe. This is also administered based on the age, digestive capacity and other ailments. Apart from this, there is a fourth type, called daily therapeutic purgation.

Daily Therapeutic Purgation - Body Detoxification Procedure

This involves consuming certain Ayurvedic herbs everyday as a part of the diet for daily detox. This is a very mild form of purgation everyday which can be very beneficial for maintaining results of virechana.

Now, based on every woman's health and body type, virechana can be customised.
