What is Nasya Therapy in Ayurveda?

Nasya therapy, also known as nasal therapy, is a detoxification method practised by ayurvedic experts that helps keep your nasal passages clean and balanced. Apart from keeping the nasal passages detoxified, it has the additional benefits of providing mental clarity and overall well-being.

In simple terms, it's like giving your nose and head a spa day!

How the head?

Well, in Ayurveda, it's a common understanding that the nose is the doorway to the head.

Here's how;

  • The nasal cavities are connected to different sinuses, which are part of the cranial bone.
  • Many nerves are connected from the nasal cavity and sinuses to the brain, which is an important part of your sensory system (smell, taste, sight and hearing).
  • The purity of the nasal cavity and respiratory system affects the function of the brain. Any infection or inflammation of the nasal cavity and the structures around it is considered as a potential risk to the brain. For example, complicated sinusitis has the ability to spread infection to the brain.
  • Moreover, the air pressure within the sinuses connected to the nasal cavity maintains the equilibrium within the head. Nasal function can directly affect cranial comfort and health.

As per Ayurveda, our bodies are made of three energies or doshas - Vata, Pitta, Kapha - all maintained in a perfectly balanced state in each individual. When these three energies go out of balance, they cause health issues.

Nasya therapy helps to balance the doshas by clearing out any vitiated doshas through the nose and keeping things flowing smoothly. It is an essential part of the whole Panchakarma Therapy.

In the therapy, specific oils, herbal powders or juice from herbs are used to instil into the nose.
